Meet our new table - FVF-83 on wheels
Animal restraint during ultrasound examinations
21 December 2022
Animals must be as still as possible during ultrasound examinations. But this can be difficult to achieve, even with the help of several assistants and the owner. However, there are special devices that make the examination more comfortable for both the vet and the animals themselves.
Abdominal ultrasound
During an abdominal ultrasound, the animal must normally lie on its back. This is hard and uncomfortable for the patient. He tends to be nervous, twitching and disturbing the examination. If the procedure is carried out without additional aids, he must be secured by several people. And even when there are enough helpers, the veterinarian has to take a long time to calm the animal down to see anything in the pictures.
That's why we recommend the use of a special M-shaped cushion. This cushion allows you to fix your pet in a supine position. It is soft, comfortable and easy for him to remain still. As a rule, if the animal lies on the cushion, one person can control its posture. This means that only the owner and the technician can stay in the ultrasound room - no extra helpers are needed.
M-shaped cushion
Our M-Cushion is available in sizes ranging from large dogs to cats to puppies. If you have an appointment with a patient with unusual dimensions (e.g. a tiger), you can order a cushion to suit your needs.
Our M-shaped cushions are made from radiopaque materials. This means that they can help with securing the animal not only during the ultrasound, but also during the X-ray. The only part of the cushion that is impervious to X-rays is the zip. But it is on the side and will not be visible on the X-ray.
Cardiac ultrasound
Securing the animal during a heart ultrasound is also quite tricky. You have to lay the patient on their side and slide the ultrasound probe in from underneath. On a normal table, this is difficult to do: the animal has to lie on the edge and this makes it even more uncomfortable.
There is also a special cushion for examinations that require the patient to lie on his side. There's a notch in it, which makes it easy to position the probe in the right area. The animal is then secured in the correct position, and there is practically no need to hold it additionally.
Pillow for cardiac ultrasound
There are special ultrasound tables available so that the animal doesn't have to lie on the edge. Such a table has recesses - especially for the transducers. Some designs have hinged doors instead of recesses: in cardiac examinations they are lowered, and in other cases the table can be used as an ordinary examination table.
If you often have large patients to examine, it is better to choose a electrically powered table. The tabletop can be lowered to just about the floor, sit the patient on it and then be raised to a level comfortable for the vet.
